A News Bulletin Claimed To Be From 1992: Real or Doctored?

A short clip was widely circulated on social media platforms. The clip was stated to be from a news bulletin from 1992. It claims that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Shareef ran away with her then-driver Captain Safdar in 1992.  A Tiktok user shared the clip with the following hashtags,  مینڈیٹ_پر_ڈاکا_نامنظور #عمران_خان_کو_رہا_کرو #

An other X user posted the same clip with following caption: “ مارچ 1992 پی ٹی وی کی خبر، جب مریم نواز اپنے ڈرائیور کے ساتھ بھاگ گئ عاشق کے ساتھ. مرحوم عبدالسلام کی زبانی!

March 1992 PTV News, when Maryam Nawaz ran away with her driver Ashiq. The words of the late Abdul Salam!” (English Translation of post)

On X (formerly Twitter), the video was shared here and here gaining more than 1K views. On Instagram here,  on TikTok herehere and here gaining more than 2K views. On YouTube, it was shared here from an account named ‘PTI Unofficial’.

To verify the claim’s authenticity, a comprehensive fact-checking process was initiated. A reverse imaging technique was employed, revealing that the news bulletin from PTV, purportedly from 1988-89 and featuring anchor Abdul Salam, was altered and dubbed with fake audio to defame the newly appointed Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

The doctored clip was widely circulated by supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to discredit the newly appointed Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, and tarnish the reputation of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N).

Our fact check confirmed that the shared video clip was manipulated and fabricated to spread false and defamatory claims about Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The original news bulletin from PTV was altered and falsely dubbed to create a misleading narrative. This misinformation appears to have been disseminated with the malicious intent to discredit and defame Maryam Nawaz Sharif and the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N).
