Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Falsely Accused of Blasphemy

A video was widely circulated on X (Formerly Twitter) accusing Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz of blasphemy. A verified account with more than 176.8K followers posted the video with caption,

کیا اس گستاخ عورت پر کوئی مولوی کوئی مفتی کوئی لبیکی فتویٰ لگائے گا”

ختم نبوت کی اس غدار کو ووٹ دو گے

Translated as “Will any Maulvi, Mufti or Labiki issue a fatwa on this insolent woman? Will you vote vote for this traitor?”

This post had more than 296K views and was shared more than 500 times at the time of reporting. The video was widely shared by pro-Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf supporters.

On X (formerly Twitter), the video was shared here and here gaining upwards of more than 300K views.

Through utilization of reverse imaging techniques, it was determined that the shared video dates to September 2023. When speaking to the media outside the Islamabad High Court, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz added that the PTI chief changed the definition of religion according to his liking. She said, “Religion is a personal matter, but it does not when you say voting for PML-N and not voting for PTI is a sin,”

 

The press talk was shared out of context to accuse CM Maryam Nawaz of blasphemy. According to Pakistan law of blasphemy, anyone directly or indirectly shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to pay fine.

 

Our factcheck confirmed that an old video of Chief Minster Maryam Nawaz Sharif was shared with false context accusing her of blasphemy. In the full clip Maryam Nawaz while can be heard criticising her opponent Imran Khan for using religion in his speeches.
