Is This Where Imran Khan Was Kept in The Attock Jail?

An image was widely circulated on X (Formerly Twitter) claiming former Prime Minster Imran Khan was kept in a death cell in the Attock jail. The posted picture shows the miserable condition of the cell.

The claim gained traction on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), the claim was shared here, here, here and here accumulating more than 10K views.

To verify the claim’s accuracy, an extensive fact-checking procedure was undertaken. A reverse image search revealed the shared image is of a cell in the Ohio State Reformatory, a historic prison formally known as the Mansfield Reformatory that has now ceased operations but is open to the public as a museum and where the 1994 movie “The Shawshank Redemption” was filmed. The picture was uploaded to ‘Unsplash’, a royalty-free photography website, by Michael & Diane Weidner on 21 March 2021.

The viral claim appears to have been shared to portray former Prime Minister Imran Khan to evoke sympathy for his alleged mistreatment in jail.

Our fact check confirmed that the claim suggesting former Prime Minister Imran Khan was kept in a miserable condition jail cell in Attock is false and misleading. The image used to support the claim is not from Attock jail but from the Ohio State Reformatory, a museum, and former prison in the United States.
